Animal Farm - Authors and Text - Literature

Animal Farm This extensive unit provides detailed materials on Orwell’s novel. At all times the student is directed back to explore the text, which is why there are constant references to page numbers in the Heinemann New Windmills edition.

The unit can be used in several different ways:

  • Students can use them as an interactive resource.
  • They can be printed as source material or for revision.
  • Teachers can adapt the resources for different purposes, and in order to differentiate.

It is suggested that you begin by looking at the Teachers’ notes, which outline the approach and the range of activities available.

As the section on The historical context makes clear, Orwell’s first readers knew this was more than a fairy story, as he described it on the title page. Students might be interested to read other works by Orwell, including his famous Nineteen Eighty-Four and the autobiographical Homage to Catalonia. These texts convey the Spanish Civil War experiences, which helped shape the views subtly expressed in Animal Farm.
