NEAB GCSE English Anthology - Authors and Texts - Literature

Elegy for Himself - Chidiock Tichborne

Tower of London

This unit provides a detailed exploration of this poem from the AQA/NEAB GCSE Anthology. Students are presented with a hyperlinked version which will take them through a close reading of the poem, examining the text at word and sentence level before moving on to consider the poem as a whole.

This is followed by an exercise on the poem and an interactive study of the poem's structure. Both of these are also available as worksheets to print out.

This thorough examination of a deceptively simple poem should prove of value to students whether or not they are following this particular GCSE syllabus.

There is a copy of the poem together with a few notes on the University of Toronto site. The version of the poem in the NEAB Anthology differs slightly from the version of the poem on that site (see lines 7, 8 and 9 of the second stanza). A note on the University of Toronto site sheds light on this, if anyone asks!
