If you would like more help in making the most of the Internet, please see the page on the Internet for English teachers in our ICT help section.

Search Engines and Directories

  • AltaVista
A search engine which selects web sites automatically, and lists them in order by the number of keywords in the title or text, and can answer simple direct questions.

  • Google
Another excellent search site. Google is particularly clever at seeking out obscure sites dedicated to specific authors.
  • Yahoo UK and Ireland
A directory which organises sites into categories. For example, for Shakespeare see Arts/Humanities ->Literature->Playwrights -> Shakespeare, William (1564-1616)

  • HotBot
A directory which organises sites into categories.

  • Inference Find
Searches several search engines in parallel, sorts the results and provides a single page of matches.

  • Ask Jeeves
Uses natural language to ask for information. It provides answers from its own database as wells as links through other search engines.

Image searching
  • AltaVista
By far the best image searching site is the one provided by the US site of AltaVista, which operates a family filter mechanism.
