Revelation - the word detective game

Revelation is a word detective game. Players have to find the hidden text by guessing or buying letters. Each letter bought and each mistake costs points - but clever guesses soon build a big score. For a fuller account and further teaching ideas, please see the teachers' introduction.

How to play

The game starts with a frame full of blank coloured squares with only the punctuation shown. At the bottom of the frame a line shows the current score and below that are the items you can buy. Simply click on a letter at the foot of the screen and every instance of that letter will be filled in and your score will drop by ten points.

Each correct letter entered scores a point - and if you are skilful enough to enter several letters at once your score will leap dramatically!

To begin with, buy a selection of strategic vowels and consonants. Resist the temptation to buy the spaces between words unless you are truly stuck.

Try the Tennyson poem as a gentle introduction - you may recognise the poem and think of ways to explore the vocabulary and rhyme. This example also demonstrates the ability to offer a clue, to reveal parts of the text and to focus on a word class (in this case, the adjectives).

Ideas for using Revelation - and literacy links

  • Using a projector and interactive whiteboard, the class attempts to reveal a poem. The importance of grammar, poetic features and accurate spelling are all demonstrated.
  • After studying a poem together, students see who can complete the whole text first - and with the highest score.
  • The game begins with part of a text revealed; completing the passage reinforces subject matter covered in a lesson.
