Elizabeth Laird Questions & Answers

What do I look like?
I have grey hair, lots of wrinkles, my own teeth, a flashing smile and I wear glasses when I really want to see. Otherwise I don't bother.

Where do I live?
I live in a house with too many books right next to a big park. Owls hoot round the roof at night and there are loads of fruit bushes in the garden.

Do I share my home with anything interesting?
My husband's quite interesting. He's always whizzing off to the Middle East and nearly getting blown up. My two sons are pretty interesting too, but there's not enough space to tell you about them. Anyway, they mightn't like it!

When was I born?
During the Second World War in New Zealand. Everyone thought the Japanese were about to invade, but they didn't.

Where did I grow up?
In South London, which I liked. There was a railway line at the back of the house and I used to lie in bed and imagine I was going places.

What were my favourite things?
Music, books and going for really scary rides on the back of my brother's motorbike. Also, his baby squirrel that used to live in his pocket.

What did I hate?
Being bored.

What was my favourite story?
Cue for Treason by Geoffrey Trease. I thought historical novels were brilliant. (Still do.)

What did I want to be?
I wanted to be beautiful, and wear masses of make-up and really trendy clothes. Funnily enough, I never wear make-up now.

Tell us about your books
The problem with this question is that all my books are different. I mean there's the one I've quoted from here (Hiding Out), and the one about my own little brother (Red Sky in the Morning - it's rather sad), and a war story set in the Middle East (Kiss the Dust), and one about school (Secret Friends), and ten (yes, ten!) set in Africa, about Big Animals (that's the Wild Things series).

Where do I get my ideas from?
Aaghh! Not that question again! I don't know. They just pop into my head. I mean, where do you get your dreams from?

What do I do when I'm stuck for an idea?
Go for a long walk in the park and contemplate a total career change.
